Getting to your destination safely during winter

Driving on Ohio roads in the wintertime can be a stressful experience. Even when road crews are diligent with plowing and using ice melting products, some of the roads can still be slick and hazardous. However, there are ways you can reduce your risk of an accident if you need to drive on winter roads, starting with proper vehicle care.

Driving Around Town During Cold Weather

When you're getting ready for that in-town trip, be sure you don't run your vehicle in an enclosed garage to let it warm up. The carbon monoxide fumes could be deadly. Always open the garage door or back the car out before letting it idle. You may also want to stop at the gas station on the way into town, since it's best to keep your gas tank at least half full.

If there is any risk of ice, snow, or slush on the roads, don't use your cruise control. It's too easy for your vehicle to get away from you if you hit a slippery patch. By driving slower, and always looking and steering where you want to go, you can drive more safely in the winter.

Long-Distance Driving During Winter

If you need to drive a long distance in the winter months, there are some important tips that should be added to the safe driving list. First, watch the weather reports for several days in advance, so you know what to expect. Take your cell phone with you, and make sure it's fully charged. You may also want to have an emergency kit with snacks, water, and a blanket, so you have a better chance of staying warm and safe if you should find yourself stranded in the snow.

If you do get stranded, stay with your vehicle. Clear snow from the tailpipe, and don't try to push your car out by yourself. You could get injured. Call for help, and tie something brightly colored to your antenna so rescue workers can find you.

If Injured In A Crash Explore Your Legal Options

While you can take steps to make your outings as safe as possible you cannot control other drivers on the road. If you are injured in a collision caused by another driver you may have legal options. A personal injury lawyer can help determine whether you have a case.
