High death toll predicted over Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, but unfortunately it is also one of the deadliest times of year in terms of traffic accidents. This is due in part to an overall increase in traffic as people travel to spend time with family and friends for the holiday. Impaired driving is another common factor in Memorial Day crashes, with many people consuming alcohol at cookouts and parties, and some choosing to get behind the wheel before sobering up.

Nationwide, the National Safety Council predicts that there will be 40,900 injuries and 382 deaths resulting from car accidents over Memorial Day weekend this year. For these purposes, the NSC defines the holiday weekend as running from 6:00 pm on Friday, May 23, through midnight on Monday, May 26. For anyone who has been injured in a traffic accident in Ohio, it is important to understand that there are legal options available to help you get back on your feet again.

In many cases, it is possible to obtain financial compensation for the losses you and your family have sustained as a result of the crash, including property damage, lost income and medical bills. However, if you wait too long or agree to settle your claims with the insurance company without help from a lawyer, it is possible that you could inadvertently sacrifice your right to pursue maximum compensation. Therefore, as soon as possible after a crash, it is a good idea to talk things over with a skilled personal injury lawyer.
