You deserve respect when you're in a nursing home

If you or a loved one have been hurt in a nursing home and are a victim of abuse, it's important that you get the legal help you need. You shouldn't have to live in fear of a nurse or orderly who injures you, just as you shouldn't have to be concerned about dangerous residents injuring you.

Elder abuse is very real, and physical violence, stealing, sexual abuse and other concerns must be noted and investigated. Federal law requires the rights of residents to be protected. That means that any of the following may be a violation of your rights.

-- Abuse. You should be free from verbal, sexual and physical abuse whether you're at a nursing home or in your own home.

-- Restraints. These should not be used as a convenience or punishment. If they are, you could cite negligence or abuse.

-- Fear. Fear is a kind of abuse as well. You should never have to fear for yourself just because you want to report something bad that has happened to the staff or make a complaint about a problem you have.

-- Lack of respect. A lack of respect is not only rude but uncalled for and unprofessional. The elderly should be treated with respect, and they should have input in their schedules and day-to-day activities.

If you feel your rights have been violated, you are not alone and don't have to face the agency on your own. Our website has more information on elder abuse and the steps you can take to resolve your case against a nursing home.
